Widow Maker Calls By State

Jeff Weedling ~ Indiana ~ 2009

I've wanted to try turkey hunting for the past several years, but made my mind up that I was wanting to go with somebody that knew the ropes first. I'm 52 years old and have never turkey hunted. Deer and hog hunting is my passion, but I've REALLY wanted to bag a turkey to see what this craze was all about.

Well yesterday was the opener here in Indiana, and I had an opportunity from a good friend that I couldn't turn down. Needless to say, I felt like a kid on Christmas Eve. Sloppy and I hit the woods early, way before first light and got set up. After approximately 30 minutes the gobblers started in.

We relocated from our original position when Sloppy spotted 3 big Toms that were strutting their stuff across the ravine. The sneak was on. Sloppy slithered out to set a hen decoy on top of the hill we decided to set up on.

Meanwhile, we lost sight of the Toms we had spotted. About that time, 3 birds came out from the same stretch of timber. Sloppy hit the Widow Maker Scratch Box and they came running after spotting the decoy.

Here was the end result..

My first turkey.. I know it's not a record book bird, but for having just 1 or 2 days available to hunt due to staffing issues at the firehouse, I'm pretty happy.

We cut the fan off to use in Scott's Pretty Boy decoy, hoping to shake things up for Sloppy in the quest for a double, but the birds didn't want to cooperate for the rest of the day. The fan is now pinned and drying in my garage.

Thanks for taking me under your wing, Scott. I know I only learned a smidgeon of what it takes to get on those buzzards, but you taught me more in a days time than I could ever imagine.

I owe ya, buddy.. Jeff

Ernie Hendry ~ Florida ~ March 2009

Craig,

I received my 2 calls last Thursday, and put them to work on Saturday morning. I've enclosed a picture of my 10 year old son, Jake's, first turkey. A 9 1/2 " bearded Osceola gobbler he bagged after I called the Tom in off the roost. Very exciting!

Jim McEathron ~ New York ~ Aug 2008

Hello from Jim McEathron of Bath. Called in two birds with that little scratch box you made while I visited with you last May. Little box, great sound! Yes, turkeys will gobble and yes, they will come in IF you have the RIGHT CALL. Still hope to ride the Vulcan over the hill and pick up another call. I did order one, didn't I? J

Mike Prichard ~ New York - June 2008

Craig - The wind was blowing so hard that it blew the decoy across the field from were my dad and I were hunting. There were three toms gobbling hard and on the double Widow Maker Double Crystal that you helped me build in your shop this spring. This bird came from out of no where, responding only to the Widow Maker Crystal. It was a great hunt and a hell of a call. Mike Prichard - June 2008

Call makers note: Mike and I built that crystal together this spring as a gift for his dad. We used my pattern, but Mike did the construction. I am happy to hear the turkeys are enjoying it as well. Craig King - Widow Maker Calls

John Coit ~ South Carolina - April 2008

My son Michael and I had a heck of a hunt today. We started out slow on a property that usually holds a bunch of toms. Only two birds were heard and both were far off. We decided to make a late run to another property.

We rolled in at 8:30 am and eased into an area behind a pasture that had two bays hoping to catch a late gobbling bird. Sure enough a few minutes of listening brought some gobbles to us and we started off in that general direction. Five set ups later we had racked up one bird into gun range that made us, 3 close encounters with just out of range birds, and a total of 7-9 toms that gobbled pretty much continuously for 3 hours.

By 11:15 we had finally made our way around to a pine tract in the center of the property heading toward one of the last gobbling birds. This one had originated from a familiar area where we kept encountering a poacher earlier in the season. I knew he was call shy and I also knew he hadn't heard the Widow Maker Butternut Scratcher Craig sent me last week. I used the contour in the pines to approach the bird clucking and doing walking yelps. Plain and simple he believed it and rattled off a double gobble to let us know. I halted our creep and set up Mike in front on the 3.5 12 me 10 yards back with the twenty just in case.

Five minutes went by and I heard the gobbler drumming to our left in the pines behind some brush. I whispered to Mike multiple times ,"he's to your left". He didn't react at first and I thought he wasn't understanding what I was saying. I yelped one time on the diaphragm to stop the bird. He hammered the call. No doubt Mike knew he was there now. In fact he already knew the bird was there but was mid decision of how to get his gun turned left 90 degrees. The bird half strutted ahead and I said no way Skippy, your not walking past us this time. That's far enough. Boom!

I let the twenty rip and came back off recoil on my feet running to the flopping bird. Mike was side by side with me. It wasn't until a few minutes later I heard Mike say, "When I shot I wasn't really expecting him to go down like that and jacked another shell immediately". We both shot the bird at the same time and neither of us knew the other had shot. Bottom line during cleaning we found fives and sixes in the birds neck and he is now double dead.

Thanks to Bang and Tommy of PVHC for another great day in the spring turkey woods. Conservatively we heard 400-500 gobbles this am out of 7-9 toms. World class turkey hunting is an understatement for what we had this morning. I couldn't be happier that my son and I got to share such a great hunt on a great bird.

Thanks to Craig King for the scratcher, it suckered him when nothing else would.

22 lbs 11 1/4 inch beard 1 1/16 spur and the other was 3/4 broken off.

Joe Intelicato - Mountaintop, PA  - March 2008

Craig,
I got your call the other day and I must tell you it looks and sounds great! I don't have a lot of experience with box calls so I am just hoping I can do it justice. I will keep you posted on this years hunts. Thanks for remembering me, I thought I would have been scratched from your list. Good luck and shoot straight. Joe Intelicato Joe Intelicato - March 2008

Shawn Wommack - Zebulon Georgia

I tell you, we had used a vest full of calls that morning and we decided to change locations. Scott decided to give the scratch call a test and BAM......double gobbles and 10 minutes later my Mossberg sent a payload of "Hevi-13's #6 down range.......incredible call Graig, especially when you consider that both Sloppy and I are good callers and nothing else was working in the 86 degree heat.

Mark Eichenaub - Little Rock, AR February 2007

I LOVE IT LOVE IT, LOVE IT I showed it to a couple of old timers at church Sunday they even said that it had the best sound they have ever heard. You do make the best box calls on the market TODAY!! I will be ordering your sweet talker next year.

Mark Eichenaub - Little Rock, AR April  2007

I got my first turkey this year it was with your call. I will have pictures tomorrow for ya I just wanted to ask you Craig how can you be so humble when you make the best box call out there? I just wanted to tell you thanks and I will be buying a sweet talker next year.

Sloppy Snood ~ Coverdale, Idiana ~ February 2008

The guys are really getting excited. I never in my life would have ever
thought I would receive telephone calls and e-mails galore wanting to know how to buy one of your scratchers. Everyone that has taken the time to watch your "playing a scratch box" video on the site has been able to call in a Tom. They didn't always get a harvest but they could call the min without difficulty.

Thank you again Craig for doing this for the guys. I really appreciate it
and will continue to alert my hunting friends about your awesome products
and website.

May your 2008 be filled with more orders than you have time for! ;-)

Craig, Check out what the Black Scratcher did for me and my hunting buddy: Black Scratcher Story

Thank you.  This call was THE ONLY call (out of 17 calls utilized) that the Georgian Toms would respond to on the hot 86°F day!  Pleased?  Yep.....2 birds to the gun.

Sloppy Snood ~ March 2006

Craig, Sloppy got the Sweet Talker and the Black Scrtacher.  The Sweet Talker is very nice…loud and raspy…..great job.  Now I seldom use a scratch box style call but dangit…….that Black Scratcher is definitely going into the woods.  It talks the turkey talk for sure!  My season starts Wednesday, April 26th so I’ll send some pictures and a story if I am fortunate enough to bag another Hoosier gobbler.  Thank you for making these calls for me.

Sincerely,
Sloppy Snood

Terry Day ~ Constantia, New York ~ March 2006

Hello Mr. King, This is Terry Day..... I received your scratch box today and just had to drop you a line letting you know how pleased I am with it. I told you I was pretty much a rookie with scratchers.... Well, yours makes me look at least like I knew something about playing one, yours plays MUCH easier than any other I have tried and I will definitely hunt with it. With any luck at all, you will get an email sometime in May letting you know how the gobblers like it...... Thanks very much...... Terry

Again in April 2005

Craig, Man its been a blast so far this year with your boxes. John Coit and I have been double teaming with the Widow Makers this year and lets just say there are already a lot of lonely hens around. I love the Sweet Talker and the Gobbler Starter. John and I have been using them in combination and they are deadly. Thanks for the great calls and I am sure there will be more toms fall to the widow makers.

Dusty Springs ~ Timmonsville, SC ~ March 2005

Craig, Just wanted to say that you make some fine boxes. I love the "Sweet Talker" and I have ordered a "Gobbler Starter" as well. Thanks for a fine call and I'll be doing business with you again.

Dusty Springs ~ Timmonsville, SC ~ March 2006
Craig John Coit just told me that you might be cutting down the number of calls you put out this year so I figured I would place an order for a scratch box.  John and I have been playing with the calls for a few weeks and I love that Black Scratcher he has, heck I like all the calls you build.  Hopefully there will be some more toms fall victim to another new Widow Maker this spring. By the way that new Gobbler Started I got from you at the end of the season last year went to work pretty quick, here are a few pics.

Marvin Henry, Topeka Kansas ~ April 2004

CRAIG, MY NAME IS MARVIN HENRY I PURCHASED A COUPLE OF CALLS FROM YOU LAST YEAR, THE GOBBLER STARTER AND A RED SCRATCHER. I HAD GREAT RESULTS WITH BOTH CALLS CALLED IN AND KILLED 32 BIRDS IN THE 2003 SPRING SEASON. THAT RED SCRATCHER IS UNBELIEVABLE, IT HAS BECOME MY FAVORITE AND MOST EFFECTIVE CALL. UNFORTUNATELY I HAD A CLIENT OUT YESTERDAY AND THE WINDS WERE HOWLING-GUSTS TO 35 MPH-AS WE WERE PREPARING TO TRY A DIFFERENT LOCATION I WAS GETTING MY VEST OUT OF THE TRUCK WHEN A BIG GUST OF WIND BLEW MY DOOR SHUT AND CAUGHT MY VEST IN IT CRUSHING A COUPLE OF CALLS. ONE BEING THE SCRATCH BOX AND THE OTHER WAS MY CODY GLASS. SO I NEED TO GET A NEW SCRATCH BOX AND WOULD LIKE TO BUY ONE OF  YOUR CRYSTAL CALLS. I NEED THEM AS SOON AS POSSIBLE FOR IT IS JUST THE START OF OUR SEASON AND I HAVE SEVERAL CLIENTS COMING IN. I FEEL LOST WITHOUT MY SCRATCH BOX. PLEASE LET ME KNOW HOW MUCH I OWE AND WILL SEND YOU MONEY ORDER OVER NIGHT. THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP AND SUCH A GREAT PRODUCT. SINCERELY MARVIN HENRY  ~ ONCE AGAIN THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP!!!!!!!!

Tim Case, Brewerton, New York  ~ March 2004

Hello Craig, I Just received my scratcher, and it didn't take long to start making some excellent sounds. I hope to score with that call it sounds great. I am pretty good with diaphragm calls, but want to go purely friction this year and hope to do it with your calls, might just have to order the crystal!!!!
Thanks Tim

Tim Case ~ New York ~ March 2006
Hi Craig, wanted to touch base with you, last year turned out to be an awesome year for me Hunted strictly with the box and the scratcher got to say they both sound great and used them with confidence, but the scracther was the curtain call. The reason I am contacting you is I am interested in another box call,  can you please let me know the availability of them if its not  to late.

Callmaker's note: Chris owns several Widow Makers and as you can see puts them to good use in the turkey woods.

Christopher Diaz ~ Beaufort, SC March 2003

Hello again Craig,

I would like one of each please.  You make awesome calls.  The woods again are Ash, Osage, Rosewood and sounds like you recommend the Brazilian Chestnut.  Give me a total on the 4 and I will put a check in the mail in the morning.

Thanks Sir, Chris

PS: Do you recognize the box call over my first gobblers head?  :)

======= Comment for 2nd Gobbler Starter =======

Craig, I was in awe at the beauty and sound of the box call!  You rock!  I'll let you know how my season goes...which opens in a week.  Take care and thanks again. (Gobbler Starter )

Chris

David A. & Marjie Calhoun Sr. ~ West Monroe, LA - March 2003

Good Evening Craig

Thank you so much for the Scratch Box,  Marjie and I both love it, If the box call's sound any better than this little box we won't be able to stand it. It took me 30 minute's to catch her so I could give it a try I opened it and she grabbed it and ran with it. We went to your web site to make sure we were using it correctly and now we can make the same sound's as in the video.

David Calhoun ~ West Monroe, LA - March 2003

Hey Craig

Just wanted to let you know I received the Gobble Starter today.

My man this is one of the finest box call's I have ever heard, also one of the prettiest I have seen. I just hope I can do it justice, If I don't call in a bird with it I promise I screwed up my calling, and it won't be because of the call itself. I'm one of those people who believe you get what you pay for, and I received more than I bargained for in this box call, the detailed work that went into the making of the Gobble Starter is evident from the time I opened the shipping box. I'll promise I'll tell everyone about you and your great call's.

Thank You for your patience and detail work.

David

Great Call

Thank You
David A. & Marjie Calhoun Sr

Pierre Sims ~ Crystal Lake, IL May 2003:

Craig, Just wanted to let you know that I received your call today.  Thank You, it is even better than I had hoped for.  The quality of the call and the sound are great.  I wish we had a fall season cause I hate to not be able to get in the woods with it til next year.  I can assure you I will be ordering from you again soon.  Thanks again, Pierre (Jim) Sims

Peter Rhines ~ Ontario, Canada, March 2003:

Hi Craig, I just had to let you know that I received my call and words don't do it justice. The workmanship is far superior to what I expected and best of all it sounds great. I can assure you that I'll be ordering other calls in the future and when the guys I hunt with see it, I'm sure that they'll want one too.     Thanks for a great call,

Pete

Shane Shott ~ Eastland, TX February 2003

Hi Craig,

MAN OH MAN  WHAT A LITTLE PACKAGE OF DYNAMITE,
this thing is unbelievable, it out talks most of my box calls that I paid up
to four times as much. It don't get no better, you just got yourself another
life long customer. Thanks again.

Tom Shalvis - Wellsbury, WV "Craig, thanks a lot for the two beautiful calls. I love them. they sound excellent. I can't wait to use them. The season is about two months away. I'll let you know how the turkeys down here like them.  I might have to sign  a contract with Krogers (our local grocery chain), to supply them with turkey breasts.   well take care and thanks a million." sincerely, Tom Shalvis - February 2003

Mike Green, Bay St. Louis, MS  Craig, During the last 30 or so years I have purchased many turkey calls searching for the best so far as sound, looks, and user friendly goes. I have narrowed my choice to 3 call-makers that I never go in the woods without. I can say that you are one of those call-makers. The turkeys I hunt are located in a small area and are called to and shot at everyday. I must have an edge or I will not get a turkey to respond to me. The result of your call is shown in the accompanying picture. Thanks for a good product.
Mike Green Mississippi - April 2002

Call-Makers Note =  Mike owns 5 Widow Makers (2-Scratchers, 1-Gobbler Starter and 2-Double Crystals). Aside from the calls, Mike works hard to understand the turkey, the effects of hunting pressure has on them and how to overcome these pressures by giving the birds something new and unique to respond to. I am happy to have a place in his vest with a few other fine call makers.

Mike Green ~ Bay St. Louis, MS

Craig, your gobbler starter did it again opening day in 2004 down here in Mississippi. called in 22 pound , 11 inch, 1.3inch tom for my son. It was the biggest tom that I ever had respond to my calling. love that screamer. Mike. Mississippi 17 Apr 2004

Jerry Richardson SC,

Hi Craig,

Man, I really like that call. I'll have you some more clients soon. My brother will probably be the first one I send to you. It was really good to meet you too. Hopefully you'll be able to get away next year for a little flat land hunting. I know that John is looking forward to it too.  I'll be getting in touch with you pretty soon about one of those scratch box calls too. Till then.

Scott Diedrich, Springville, New York: Awesome scratchers Craig, received them yesterday and they sound and look awesome. They seem to sound better without the chalk though, Great job, thank-you. Hope the gobbler starter sounds  just as good. Scott Diedrich, Springville,  May 2002

THOMAS E ARMISTEAD, GA: CRAIG, MY DOUBLE CRYSTAL GLASS CALL CAME TODAY AND IT SOUNDS GREAT. PLEASE  MAKE ONE FOR MY SON -IN -LAW. PLEASE SEND IT TO HIM. THOMAS E ARMISTEAD GA. April 2002

Craig Hall, New Castle, PA: Dear Mr. King,  I received my Widow Maker Double Crystal call today and wanted to thank you. First thing I notice was how responsive and easy the call was to use. It is extremely LOUD! Almost as loud as my favorite custom Boat Paddle call, yet it will call very soft as well. Held high in the hand, the call is clear. Held low in the hand the call becomes raspy and there is NO DEAD SPOT anywhere on the call.  It will call sharp as well as sweet.
I own many custom slate and glass calls, this call with out a doubt is more versatile, easier to use, and better sounding than many of the "award winning" , big name custom calls I own. This call can be sharp and piercing when I need it or soft and sweat.
I have taken the liberty of following the tradition set by many of the old time turkey hunters and named the call you sent me " Lady Shrew" due to it's piercing qualities. While this may not be the most flattering name there is, but please keep in mind out of the many custom calls I own, I have only named three of them (the Boat Paddle I use, the trough call I use and "Lady Shrew"). I only name calls I feel are of the utmost quality and those are few and far between.
I look forward to using her this spring and can't wait to use her on those windy PA fall turkey seasons. Thank you again for sending me such a great call. Good luck this spring. Sincerely,  Craig Hall New Castle, PA January 2002

Jim Bell, Harpers Ferry, WV: Craig, First of all thanks for the new call.   I cant believe how good it sounds.  I think you are setting me up for a "sweet talker".  I will be giving the call to Samson probably next Wednesday or so as we are going down to Beckley to start for the next week's hunt.  I guess we'll see, I don't need all these calls but I love the sound.  I feel like a "call junkie". Thanks Again, Jim Jim Bell, WV October 2001

Jeff Hansbarger, PA: Thanks for the scratcher, it sounds very nice.  It is extremely easy to produce sound with and you can vary the tone very easily as well.  Thanks again! Jeff Hansbarger September 2001

John Coit Old South Outdoors Effingham SC: Chalk up more longbeards for the gobbler starter Craig! I called in five two hours after I got your "Gobbler Starter" call for a client. He took one real nice bird, his first. Next afternoon we hammered in three more with the fast cutts this call seems to make by itself. This weekend it became my staple call and kept the birds in a fit . I knocked down two 20 pounders yesterday at 2 pm after trying the low end volume clucks on the call. Three came in quietly strutting and drumming. As usual with your calls I am impressed and so are the gobblers. PS Yesterdays action made numbers 23 , 24, 25 gobblers I have called into gun range this season , there was a Widow Maker involved in all of them. John Coit - April 2001

John Coit ~ a Widow Maker Believer

Rick: Hi Craig, I received a double glass call as a gift and decided to try it out.  I went to the woods with a good friend of mine (who just happens to be the game warden!) and attempted to catch a gobbler on video.  We actually got two huge gobblers to come to your call and attack my decoy!  Yes I got the entire episode on tape!  Later that spring I was hunting in southern Ohio and took a large bird with your call.  However on the way back to the camper I took a nasty fall and lost three calls out of my vest, one of which was yours!  Thanks for a great product! Rick - March 2001

John Coit  Today at ten am I received my "Black Scratcher" from Craig King of Widow Maker Calls. As always when I get a new piece of hunting equipment to field test I opened the box immediately and checked it out. First off the quality of construction and materials were as expected from Craig , excellent. Next to take it out and run the call a bit. I am not a calling champion by any means but I have a pretty extensive amount of practical experience with turkey calls. Within a short 30 second run I had all the confidence in my ability to use this call in the field and on stage. Very easy to run and super sweet sounds. Now to the good part. No call should be judged by its sound indoors, this is a fact. So I went out the door and cranked out a series of cutts and yelps. To my amazement I fired up a bird 200 yards into the woods behind my house. Well you cant stop there so I kept it up and within three minutes of taking this call outside for the very first time I had a strutting longbeard within plain view of my house! Nuff said , great call , as expected by Widow Maker Calls. Thanks Craig, look for some of my clients orders shortly. I am certain they will fall in love with this calls ease of use and excellent calling capability.  John Coit - March 2001

John Cotronis Apex, North Carolina: Craig - I wanted to let you know that I received my Gobbler Starter box call today. It looks wonderful!  The call sounds unlike any other box call that I have as you said it would. It really sounds great with that different sound. I can't wait to see what the gobblers think about it when I take it to the woods this spring in North Carolina. Your box call will be cherished for years to come. If it calls gobblers, which I have no doubt it will, all my friends will want Widow Maker Calls! I will send them to you Craig. You really make a nice looking and sounding call. Thanks again! John Cotronis - March 2001

Dave Godwin, Wildlife Biologist Starkville MS:  Craig, Received your Red Scratcher call a few weeks ago, and am very pleased with the look and sound of the call!!  Hope to try it out on these Mississippi birds this coming Saturday!  Will let you know if I have any success. Thanks and keep up the good work. Dave Godwin - March 2001

Ray Cartonia, Rochester, NY: Craig - The Double Crystal arrived and sounds great. I'm very pleased. Ray Cartonia, - February 2001

Luther Berry, Spring TX: Hi, Craig, Well, I received the Double Crystal call on Friday and it is a beauty! The wood is very nice and the small feathers on the bottom look great!  I am still learning how to stroke the call for various turkey sounds but am already getting good results,  I have a lot to learn.  I must improve my consistency and learn to put the call types together in natural sequences. I am definitely pleased with the call.  Thanks for a fine job! Luther Berry - January 2001

Jim Ashton, Dallas, PA: Hey Craig, Got the call yesterday,  Awesome !  Really like the tone.  I will be in touch again soon.  Merry Christmas to you and your family ! Thanks, Jim Ashton - December 2000

James Bell, Harpers Ferry, WV: Craig, Thanks for the call.  I have only played with it for a little bit and I really like the sound.  Turkeys may just run to me and hand me their beards to avoid being shot. Thanks, James Bell - November 2000

Ed Crocker, Bohannon, VA: Hi Craig, Received the calls today and they are great. I am going to take the box call with me tomorrow. The owl call is also great, thanks. Ed Crocker - October 2000

Jim Ashton, Dallas,PA: Hi Craig, I want to thank you for the beautiful Black Scratcher you built for me. I really like the contrasting colors of the osage & walnut. And it sounds great to boot !   I was a little worried having never played a scratcher before, but 10 minutes after I opened the box I was "makin music". I won't win any contests but with practice I'll do just fine. You can count on future orders from this happy hunter ! Thanks again. Jim Ashton - June 2000

Dan Stahlman, Lakeport, CA: Hi Craig, got the call Saturday.  Unfortunately, our birds have shut down so I haven't had a chance to use it.  You're right though, doesn't sound like anything I have heard but it sure does have reach and volume.  I'm sure it will do me good next year.  Will send you a picture of a good Rio when I use it to call one in . Thanks, Dan Stahlman - May 2000

Bill Scarborough, PA: I want to thank you for the Beautiful Box Calls you made for my brother and me. When we gave Ralph Snodgrass (who is our first cousin and my brother-in-law) the walnut and cedar, we felt it would be put to good use. We never expected to receive such wonderful gifts. I had just returned from two unsuccessful days of Turkey hunting when I opened the box. At first I was struck with the beauty and the superb craftsmanship of the call. But, when I made that first practice call (standing in my kitchen), I actually shuttered at the quality of it's song! I had trouble believing that I had an instrument of such quality in my hands. It made me want to grab my gear and head back to the mountains. The letter that accompanied the call is something that I will cherish with the call, and is something that I will be proud to someday pass on to my grandsons. Again, Thank You Very Much! Bill Scarborough - May 2000

John Coit, Old South Outdoors - Timmonsville, SC: Craig, This is John Coit of Old South Outdoors located in South Carolina. Recently, I had a client hunt with me and he was using one of your Widow Maker box calls. Let me tell you this, that call got the gobble out of em during the late season after some pretty intense pressure. Nothing else would produce a gobble. I was impressed not only by the effect it had on our birds but the fine quality of the box itself. We did also use a shady lady glass for the close up stuff but it was definitely the Widow Maker that got him started.  PS: I just received an email from Greg Epperson and he told me to inform you that he killed yet another longbeard with the Widow Maker on his private hunt club! Craig, just wanted to send you a picture of the gobbler I killed second to the last day of the season using your call.  I had hunted this gobbler many times during the season with no luck.  I arrived at the blind I had made earlier in the season around 1 PM.  I took the Widow Maker and gave 3 series of short, choppy yelps.  Just trying to simulate a hen walking around minding her own business.  After that I resorted to soft clucks, purrs, and feeding yelps.  The amazing thing is when this gobbler gobbled for the first time he was so far away I didn't realize the faint noise I had heard was a gobble.  Only when he gobbled the second time from about 500 yards away did I realize the previous sound I had heard was his gobble from what must have been 7 or 800 yards.  I know this is hard to believe, but I am telling you this gobbler came a LONG way.  I must have waited on him 45 minutes and he was gobbling the whole way.  With every gobble I could tell he was closer.  Now this bird probably didn't hear those clucks and purrs until he was around 200 yards away...so the one thing that brought that bird close enough to hear them was the 3 series of short, choppy yelps on the Widow Maker box.  Your call is the first pick in my arsenal and I have quite a few custom made boxes.  By far, yours is the best.  I am getting ready to travel to upstate NY to give those birds a try.  Hopefully I can make a couple of widows up there as well.  Thanks again for a great call. Greg Epperson - May 15, 2000

Greg Epperson, Charleston, SC:  Greg Epperson - February 12, 2003

Hey Craig, thanks for getting back to me.  Remember I broke my last call while belly crawling on a hard top road glassing a bird to see if it was a gobbler before I called to it?  Then, you told me to send it to you to fix and I never did find it. Seriously, I know I didn't get rid of it, but I just couldn't find the thing.  Let me tell you, you ever see a grown man cry?  Well, I was close when I saw that call broke.  I told you about the gobbler I killed with that call, and that was a true story, no BS.  Also, I hunted with John a lot last year, and I am telling you, I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't witnessed it myself; I personally was present many times when nothing but his Widow Maker would make birds gobble. I would be right beside him playing a pot call, a Tony Reynolds longbox, and giving my best on my mouth call (and I  am well above average with a mouth call), and I am telling you they wouldn't gobble till John hit that Widow Maker.  Then there was the time he and I were on a piece of public land that neither of us had ever been to before. Same damn thing. You could BET that Widow Maker would bring a gobble, if there was a bird in the areas.  John and I are going to Texas this year after the Rio, and I need a longbox.  And if I am going to have a longbox it might as well be the best available.  Let me tell you Craig, if there ever was a best kept secret in the turkey call circuit, you and your longboxes are it.  They are not for the beginner, i will say that, but they are truly amazing. Do you best man, and make me a killer, and I promise, THIS ONE AINT GETTIN BROKE!!!  Good luck this spring, and thumbs up for killing that bird that gave John such a fit ;-)

George E. Denning - Flushing, New York: "Craig, How are you? This is George E. Denning calling to say hello and to tell you that I went to Pennsylvania this weekend and I brought your call along to try it out. The thing really works. I called in an old hen that hen got really angry that another hen was in her play ground. She looked all over for the intruder and I laughed as she went on a seek and destroy mission. After about 15 minutes I let her think that she spooked the other hen away. Craig I wish you was there to see it. I am looking forward to trying it out on the fall birds. Thanks for making a very nice compact call!" George E. Denning - July 1999

Dick Lyle, President - NNY Chapter NWTF - Turkey Hunter for 25 years - Watertown, New York:
"Widow Maker Box is excellent. Having dozens of box calls in my collection, yours definitely makes the grade for sound, function and construction. It should do the job! The real winners are the Scratch Boxes. I have used Scratchers for years and yours are top quality! The raised edges that you hold are unique. They definitely help one to hold onto the call. Also, the tone and sound quality of the calls is excellent. They will be deadly in the turkey woods! Thanks for a fine product!" Dick - January '99

Monroe Nelson: Good Morning Craig, What a great box call! I have a good many and yours ranks right at the top! It's one of the easiest that I have seen to use. I can't wait to try it! Thanks for the first class workmanship. Monroe - February '99

Randy Sosebee: Craig; I received my box call today and I must say that I am very pleased. It is very beautiful. The craftsmanship is perfect. I sort of hate to take it hunting because of its beauty, but because of its sound, I will have to. You were right, It does sound different but I like the sound. It is very high pitched. I like a high pitch call. I have one of MADS' calls that are high pitched but I believe yours is higher and it has a better tone too! Thanks again, Randy - February '99

I see from your Web Page that you also make a regular box call; I'll be getting one of those as well! Thanks!" Larry - January '99

Bill Conine - Lilburn, Georgia: The Widow Maker call arrived in yesterday's mail. It is a little shorter than I had pictured it in my mind, but that is ok. It really makes a high-pitched yelp, which is exactly what I was looking for. It must be a good call, as it did not take my wife long to tell me to put it down!" Bill - January '99/

Russell Grow - Elizabethtown, Kentucky: Craig, I received my scratch box today and  I really like it as it has the raspy sound I was looking for. I will use it this weekend and let you know more. Thanks! Russell Grow - April 2000
